Do this.

Everyone should road trip across the US.

Take photos, both digital and film. Take photos of the sky, moving objects and animals in a tree that only you can make out. Take self portraits and pictures of people you meet on the way, because they will remind you later on that your trip was a good idea.

Drink so much water you are forced to let it go on the side of the road. Laugh when the wind kicks it back.

Visit New Orleans. Have beignets and coffee at Cafe Du Monde. Walk on the train tracks.

Listen to local radio.

See the sunset on route 1 in California. See the sunrise in New Mexico.

Drive with the windows down when it’s 113° and never use the ac. Drive with the windows down when it is pouring rain in Wyoming. Drive with the windows down.

Worry about making it to the next gas station. Complain about gas prices when the next stop is 39¢ less per gallon and it’s not your turn. Laugh about it when it happens again.

Get an oil and fresh coolant change. Buy new tires and make sure they are balanced.

Eat at a waffle house once, preferably in Arkansas. Eat at mom and pop places the rest of the trip and never any chain food. Over do it with dried fruit, nuts, coffee and way too much water again.

Stop for the night south of Chicago and on the west side of Memphis… sleep for 1.25 hours and honestly believe your going to die. Wake up the next morning at sunrise and drive for 21 hours straight.

Accidentally fall in love with a north western state like Idaho. Feed the ducklings.

Count the road kill in the Pan Handle.

Go to national parks. Walk bare foot in the snow in Arches, Utah. Go to national parks. See the water falls in Yosemite, California. Get to the Grand Canyon at night and sleep on a bench, only to awake at sunrise to the most amazing sight ever. GO TO NATIONAL PARKS.

Get coffee at Macy’s in Flagstaff, AZ. Have a great conversation with some hitchhiker hippies on the bench out front. Promis yourself to go back there some day and do so.

See the Hoover dam, great lakes, Niagara Falls and make a note to yourself you don’t need to go back.

Go to Charleston and Myrtle Beach, SC. See Savannah, GA. Realize the south is a great place to visit.

Drive all the way through Massachusetts from Lenox to the Cape in 2.5 hours. Take the ferry to Vineyard Haven, Martha’s Vineyard and eat at the Black Dog. The blueberry pancakes are the best. The bbs are grown on the island. Figure out why people love MV and never want to leave.

Finally, get to your last destination sleep for 2 days and say you will never do it again. Wake up a few months later, dreaming about it all and want to do it all over again.

Simple steps…

Things I need…

I need more sunshine, more work, more space to move around, more can’t-catch-your-breath laughter, more hours in the day, more hours in the night, more lenses, more test shoots, more contorted complex conversations, more positive phone calls, more space to work in, more people to bike with, more AWESOME, and more days like today.
